Nearly every home we assess in the older parts of this valley has the same weak point, and it's usually fifteen feet wide. The original aluminium sliding door onto the back patio is doing more to make your house hot than every other window combined — and it's also where film delivers the most dramatic improvement available anywhere in residential work.
Two problems in one assembly
A single-pane slider fails in two independent ways. The glass passes roughly 80% of the solar energy hitting it — there's no insulating cavity, no low-E coating, nothing between the sun and your floor but a quarter inch of clear glass.
Then there's the frame. Aluminium is an excellent thermal conductor, which is exactly what you don't want in a window frame. On a hundred-and-two degree afternoon an untreated aluminium slider frame becomes genuinely hot to touch and radiates that heat into the room, entirely separately from anything happening through the glass.
Why the size makes it decisive
A typical window might be fifteen square feet. A wide slider is often sixty or more, and in the single-story ranch plans that dominate this valley it's frequently on the south or west elevation because that's where the yard is.
That means one opening can represent a third or more of the total glass area in the house, performing worse per square foot than anything else, pointed at the worst exposure. It's why treating just that one assembly often changes how the whole house feels — a small scope with a disproportionate result.
The counterintuitive good news
Most caution around window film concerns dual-pane units, where heat absorbed by the film raises the temperature of the outer lite inside a sealed cavity and can crack it. That risk is what forces a lighter, more conservative specification on modern glazing.
Single-pane glass has no cavity and no sealed unit, so it's far more tolerant. We can generally specify a considerably more aggressive film on an original slider than we could on the modern window next to it — better performance and lower risk on the same job. It's one of the few situations in this trade where the old thing is the easy one.
- With no sealed cavity there's nothing to trap heat, and the thermal stress risk drops away.
- Tempered glass, which sliders almost always are, tolerates film well.
- The frame keeps conducting heat regardless — film treats glass, not aluminium.
- Very large panels need two installers; check that's in the quote rather than a surprise.
When we'd tell you to replace it instead
Film is not always the right answer, and we'd rather say so than take the job. If the slider's rollers have failed, the frame is out of square, the weatherstripping is gone, or the panel doesn't seal, you have an air infiltration problem that film does nothing about — and infiltration can be a larger energy issue than solar gain.
In that situation a replacement dual-pane unit solves the whole set of problems at once and film on top of it is a marginal addition. The honest test is whether the door still operates and seals properly. If it does, film is excellent value. If it doesn't, spend the money on the door.
What to expect afterwards
On a properly specified film over an original slider, expect up to about 80% of infrared heat rejected, 99% of UV blocked, and enough glare reduction to use the room and keep the drapes open in the afternoon.
What it won't do is fix heat coming through an under-insulated attic or an uninsulated west wall, and it can't compensate for an undersized air conditioner.
