Fading is the damage that never announces itself. Then a sofa moves and there's a rectangle of original colour on the floor with a paler version all around it. It happened over years, it's irreversible, and preventing it would have cost a fraction of what the flooring did.
Four causes, and UV is only the largest
Ultraviolet is blamed for the lot and actually accounts for around two fifths. Visible light adds roughly a quarter, heat about the same again, and the balance comes down to humidity and how stable the dye or finish was to start with.
That breakdown is how to read film marketing honestly. "Blocks 99% of UV" is entirely true and substantially incomplete — nearly every quality film does it, including completely clear security film. It removes the biggest single cause. Getting at the remaining 60% requires a film that also cuts visible light and infrared heat.
Why single-pane glass makes it worse
Modern low-E dual-pane glazing already blocks a meaningful fraction of UV as a side effect of its coatings. Original single-pane glass blocks very little, which means an untreated older home receives close to the full ultraviolet load all day, every day.
Combine that with wide sliders facing south or west and you get the pattern we see constantly in this valley: severe, uneven fading across a large area of floor directly in front of the door, with a sharp edge where the shadow line falls. It's the most visible fade damage we encounter anywhere.
What's most at risk
Some materials go long before others. Broadly in order of how fast they show it:
- Anything on paper, photographs, and fabric — watercolours and silk can move visibly in a single summer.
- Luxury vinyl plank and laminate, which is extremely common here and fades unevenly.
- Solid timber flooring, with cherry, walnut, and oiled boards changing first.
- Soft furnishings, rugs, and curtains, where reds and blues fail earliest.
- Leather, which dries out and loses colour fast in a hot room with direct sun.
Luxury vinyl plank is worth a specific mention: some products can also expand and cup under sustained direct sun, which is a structural failure rather than a cosmetic one, and it's not covered by most flooring warranties when it happens in direct sunlight.
How much film actually helps
A decent product stops 99% of the ultraviolet, plus a real share of visible light and heat depending which you choose. Set against untreated glass that usually buys a two to five times slowdown — four years becomes something closer to fifteen.
None of that is total protection and no film makes a room archival. But four years versus fifteen is the difference between buying the floor once and buying it three times.
Do it before, not after
Fading is cumulative and irreversible. Film applied today protects what remains; it restores nothing. If you're about to replace flooring, that's by far the cheapest moment to treat the glass — and worth doing before the new floor goes down rather than after.
